"CANDLEPINS
FOR DOLLARS" WITH ANCHOR FRANK MALLICOAT
PREMIERES MARCH 4
BOSTON, Thurs., Jan. 19, 2006 - WLVI-TV (Boston’s WB) is proud to announce the revival of candlepin bowling on local television: "Candlepins for Dollars" will premiere on Boston's WB on Saturday, March 4 at 6 p.m. Anchor Frank Mallicoat and Mike Morin, the
host of WZID-FM's "NH in the Morning" and of the late “Candlepin Stars and Strikes” on WNDS-TV, Ch. 50 (My TV)
will host the show.
The show will feature professional bowlers and
be taped at Pilgrim Lanes in Haverill, Mass. "Candlepins for Dollars" will air Saturdays from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m., with
a rebroadcast on Sundays from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Boston's WB is collaborating with local pro-bowler Bart
Maderios, who is also the director of the International Candlepin Youth Bowling Association, on the program.
“We’ve made a commitment to localism,
and candlepin bowling on New
England television is
a treasure we didn’t want lost,” said Boston's WB Vice President / General Manager Vinnie Manzi. “Local
candlepin shows have had a great track record and strong following since the '80s, and we thought it was terrible for that
tradition to go away. Our goal now is to revitalize the genre with a more intense,
more stylish show.”
Manzi said the former show’s consistent
ratings, passionate fan base and the history of the sport, piqued his interest in pursuing a new program. Candlepin bowling was founded in New England, invented in 1880 by Justin White in Worcester, Mass. The
New England origin of candlepins fit perfectly into the Boston’s WB mission to be the number one provider of signature local
events on television.
Boston's WB is arranging distribution
for "Candlepins for Dollars" on stations outside the Boston DMA in Rhode Island, Western Massachusetts, Connecticut, Eastern Maine and Canada.
WLVI-TV, Boston’s WB affiliate and Tribune Broadcasting station, is home of “The Ten O’Clock News,”
